Bioavailability of Stabilized Iron (II) Sulfate in an Industrialized Fortified Infant Dessert. Studies in Rats by Means of the Prophylactic-Preventive Method

چکیده
The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the iron bioavailability of stabilized iron (II) sulphate in industrialized fortified infant dessert. The prophylactic–preventive test in rats, using ferrous sulphate as the reference standard, was applied as the evaluating methodology. Thirty female Sprague–Dawley rats weaned, were randomized into three different groups (group 1: FeSO4 + IDF; group 2: FeSO4 stabilized + IDF and group 3: control). The iron bioavailability (BioFe) of each compound was calculated using the formula proposed by Dutra-de-Oliveira et al where BioFe = (HbFefHbFei) / ToFeIn. Finally the iron bioavailability results of each iron source were also given as relative biological value (RBV) using ferrous sulfate as the reference standard. The results showed that both BioFe and RBV % were not different among the groups assayed (FeSO4 + D 0.38±0.01 and 100%; FeSO4 stabilized + D 0.39±0.02 and 102%).

Bioavailability of Petit-Suisse cheese as food vehicle for iron fortification estimated by the prophylactic method.
Microencapsulated ferrous sulfate (SFE-171) and ferric orthophosphate in Petit-Suisse cheese were examined for iron bioavailability by the prophylactic method. The iron sources were industrially added to different samples of Petit-Suisse cheese, which were mixed with other food components in our laboratory before use. A reference standard diet inclusive of nonmicroencapsulated ferrous sulfate a...
متن کاملEvaluation of Iron Bioavailability in Caco-2 cell Culture Model: Modification of the Original Method
Background and Objectives: In the original in vitro method for evaluation of iron bioavailability using caco-2 cell model, ferritin formation by cells is considered as a functional indicator of both absorption and utilization of iron. However, as iron is measured in the tested material and then ferritin concentration is measured in caco-2 cell lysate, it is almost impossible to have a concrete ...
متن کاملBioavailability of elemental iron powders to rats is less than bakery-grade ferrous sulfate and predicted by iron solubility and particle surface area.
Foods are fortified with elemental forms of iron to reduce iron deficiency. However, the nutritional efficacy of current, commercially produced elemental iron powders has not been verified. We determined the bioavailability of six commercial elemental iron powders and examined how physicochemistry influences bioavailability. Relative biological value (RBV) of the iron powders was determined usi...
متن کاملA micronised, dispersible ferric pyrophosphate with high relative bioavailability in man.
Ferric pyrophosphate is a water-insoluble Fe compound used to fortify infant cereals and chocolate-drink powders as it causes no organoleptic changes to the food vehicle. However, it is only of low absorption in man. Recently, an innovative ferric pyrophosphate has been developed (Sunactive Fe trade mark ) based on small-particle-size ferric pyrophosphate (average size 0.3 microm) mixed with em...
متن کاملIron Absorption from Two Milk Formulas Fortified with Iron Sulfate Stabilized with Maltodextrin and Citric Acid
BACKGROUND Fortification of milk formulas with iron is a strategy widely used, but the absorption of non-heme iron is low. The purpose of this study was to measure the bioavailability of two iron fortified milk formulas designed to cover toddlers´ nutritional needs. These milks were fortified with iron sulfate stabilized with maltodextrin and citric acid. METHODS 15 women (33-47 years old) pa...
